The Vikings finished last season with an overall record of 10-2 and were 5-0 in S.G.V.L. play. For their efforts, Downey was the 2016 San Gabriel Valley League champion. Downey was defeated by Charter Oak of Covina 35-21 in the second round of the C.I.F. Division 4 playoffs.

■ The Downey Calvary Chapel football team will kick off their 2017 football season when they travel to Mission Prep of San Luis Obispo on Saturday, August 26.

The DCC Grizzlies finished last season with an overall record of 5-4 and an 8-Man Freelance League record of 3-1.

DCC started last season on a two-game win streak when they defeated Sage Hill of Newport Beach at Sage Hill 54-30 on 8/26 and when they defeated Lighthouse Christian of Santa Monica 64-8 on 9/3. DCC struggled mid-season and did not participate in postseason play. The Grizzlies fell in their season finale at Chadwick of Palos Verdes Peninsula.

Head coach Mike Nuno is still working on this season’s schedule as he begins his third season as head coach. Nuno was 5-3 in 2015 and 5-4 in 2016. Thus far, the Grizzlies are scheduled to play Julian at Downey on 9/9, are also scheduled to play Lucerne Valley at Lucerne Valley on 10/6 and are scheduled to play Laguna Beach at Downey on 11/3. DCC plays their home games at Downey High School due to facility concerns at Downey Calvary Chapel.

Coach Nuno will complete his schedule shortly and DCC will have nine games scheduled for the season. The Grizzlies will continue to compete in 8-Man football this season. Coach Nuno, his staff and players are all looking forward to the start of the 2017 football season.

■ The Downey High School softball team has a new head coach. Edgardo Garcia was the Downey junior varsity head coach last season and will now be the varsity head coach moving forward.

The junior varsity team finished last season with an overall record of 24-4 and were 10-0 in S.G.V.L. play. For their undefeated season, the junior varsity Lady Vikings were the 2017 S.G.V.L champions.

Coach Garcia has spent time at El Rancho High School, with the SoCal Choppers and Ruthless 2020-Bustos. He brings an excellent record with him and looks to get the varsity team back into the playoffs.

The Lady Vikings have finished the past two seasons with records of 14-15 overall and 4-6 in league play and 13-14 overall and 5-5 in league play, respectively. The Lady Vikings have missed the playoffs the past two seasons and Paramount has earned a playoff spot by finishing third in league play in each of the last two seasons.

The Downey junior varsity team swept both Gahr and cross-town rival Warren last season. Gahr and Warren are certainly the varsity teams to beat in league play. Winning at the junior varsity level may be a positive sign of good things to come for the Lady Vikings.

Downey defeated Gahr at Gahr on 4/13 by a score of 9-1 and again on 5/8 at Downey by a score of 10-0. The Lady Vikings defeated Warren at Warren on 4/11 by a score of 12-1 and again at Downey on 5/4 by the score of 7-2.

Things will get interesting as softball season approaches. Coach Garcia, his staff and players are all looking forward to competing for a league title this season and getting back into the playoffs.
