Graduating seniors collect nearly $434K in local scholarships

DOWNEY – Last week, Downey and Warren high schools gathered to celebrate the awards and scholarships received by Downey Unified’s 2016 senior class.

These annual Senior Awards Night celebrations were held May 18 for Warren High School and May 19 for Downey High; both awards celebrations were held at the Downey Civic Theater.

This year, nearly 330 seniors from both high schools were honored and 340 local scholarships were provided to those who qualified. Students were recognized by Downey Unified administrative leaders, teachers, staff and community representatives.

Seniors from both schools were presented with approximately $434,000 in local scholarships.

“This year, our seniors were awarded nearly $225,000 in local scholarships thanks to the generous donations made from organizations and individuals,” expressed Warren High counselor Iliana Cordova.

The Senior Awards Night celebrations concluded with the recognition of graduates with highest honors from both high schools. This designation is awarded to graduating seniors who have a cumulative state weighted G.P.A of 4.5 or higher.

Thirteen students from Warren and 12 students from Downey were honored with this recognition and will be privileged by sitting on the stage during their respective commencement ceremonies in June.

In addition to the Senior Awards Night, the Stauffer Foundation also provides the 2016 senior class with additional scholarships and grants. Annually, the Stauffer Foundation provides the following scholarships/grants to seniors who apply and qualify: Career College Grants, Scholar Athlete Awards and Community College Scholarships.

These allowances directly aid in the furtherance of Downey Unified’s graduating class.

“Downey High is very fortunate to have someone like Dr. Stauffer," said Tina Carlson, advanced placement coordinator for Downey High.

Commencement ceremonies will be held at the Cerritos College stadium beginning at 7 p.m. on June 9 for Downey and June 10 for Warren.
