DOWNEY – Middle school students and Downey law enforcement will come together this weekend as part of the Downey Kids and Cops Day event.

The event will be held from 10 am to 2:30 pm at Furman Park on Saturday. It is being co-sponsored by Gangs out of Downey and Kiwanis.

Student participants will engage in several activities, such as Frisbee and football toss, alongside Downey Police officers in a hope to create a positive relationship between the community’s youth and the officers who patrol their streets.

“What this is doing is just fostering trust and relationships with these young kids and police officers in our community,” said officer and GOOD President Lt. Mark McDaniel.

There will also be food, a DJ, and several businesses with information booths set out.

“We have a really good backing by the community and the business leaders in our town,” said McDaniel.
