Gangs Out of Downey creates Ricky Galvez scholarship

DOWNEY –  Gangs Out Of Downey (GOOD) will be hosting its annual luncheon on March 9 at the Rio Hondo Event Center.

The luncheon will support GOOD and will be held in honor of fallen Downey PD Officer Ricardo “Ricky” Galvez.

GOOD will also be presenting the inaugural “Officer Ricardo Galvez Scholarship” to two deserving youths who have committed to turning their lives around. The “Officer Ricardo Galvez Scholarship”  will be awarded by GOOD each year moving forward.

This year’s keynote speaker at the luncheon will be Los Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe. Knabe was first elected to the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors in November of 1996, and was overwhelmingly re-elected in 2000, 2004, 2008 and 2012.

GOOD will also be honoring Supervisor Knabe “for all of his great work and his continuous support of Downey,” as he steps down as Supervisor this year, said GOOD president Rick Rodriguez.

GOOD relies on support from the community to continue to educate Downey’s youth on the dangers of gang life and the importance of education. GOOD works closely with the Downey Unified School District and the Downey Police Department.

GOOD also has many partnerships with local businesses, including Downey Federal Credit Union, shown here presenting GOOD with a check for $2,500.

Downey Federal Credit Union is a longtime supporter of G.O.O.D. In fact, DFCU board member Stan Hanstad was one of the founding members of GOOD when the organization started in 1988.
