Friends of Downey City Library's June silent auction

DOWNEY – Bids will be collected through Saturday, June 24, for a silent auction benefiting the Friends of the Downey City Library. 

In addition to in-person bids at the library, bids can also be placed by calling (562) 299-6790.

Here are this month’s silent auction items: 

1. National Geographic’s The Untold Civil War: Exploring the Human Side of War, by James Robertson.  Dramatically illustrated with archival images and compelling contemporary photography, this book details surprising, little-known, and fresh aspects of the war, painting a fascinating portrait of our national character and showcasing the enduring impact of the Civil War. Minimum bid: $10

2. Downey (Images of America), by Larry Latimer and the Downey Historical Society.  This evocative volume of vintage images is a journey through Downey's bygone days. Signed by Downey’s beloved late author Larry Latimer. Minimum bid: $15

3. The History of Downey, California, by Charles Russell Quinn. Rare vintage volume (1973) depicts Downey’s historical and distinctive images and stories which have shaped the character of our community. Minimum bid: $20

4. Drawing Cutting Edge Comics, by Christopher Hart. Dozens of fantastic, how-to illustrations demonstrate the basics as well as how to create such intense coloring techniques as knockouts and glows. Plus, leading artists describe how they spin original character designs, many created exclusively for this book. Minimum bid: $9

5. The Ultimate Book of Gangster Movies: Featuring the 100 Greatest Gangster Films of All Time, by George Anastasia, et al.  Provides extensive reviews of the Top 100 gangster films of all time, including sidebars like "Reality Check," "Hit and Miss," "I Know That Guy," and other fun and informative features. 6. The Ultimate Chinese & Asian Cookbook, by Linda Doeser. The different cuisines of Asia are as varied and exciting as the vast continent itself. 400 recipes from China, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Japan and the Indian subcontinent have been collected together in this magnificent book.
