Fatal collision shuts down street

DOWNEY - A 60-year-old Downey man died Tuesday in a multi-vehicle collision that shut down a stretch of Florence Avenue for much of the afternoon.The collision occurred when the driver of a 2006 Ford pickup failed to stop at a red light and collided into the rear of a vehicle stopped at the intersection of Florence Avenue and Lakewood Boulevard, police said. The pickup continued into the intersection and collided into several vehicles stopped for the red light in the northbound lanes of Lakewood Boulevard. A total of 10 vehicles were involved in the collision, police officials said. The driver of the pickup was treated at the scene by paramedics but was pronounced dead at a local hospital. His identity was not immediately known. Another driver was transported to a hospital with minor injuries. A stretch of Florence Avenue was closed following the collision. The police department issued an emergency alert to residents announcing the road closure. The collision is still under investigation.
