ENDORSEMENT: Mario Trujillo the best choice for Downey City Council

As Downey residents prepare to mark their ballots, the choice for City Council in District 5 is clear. Over the past four years, Mario Trujillo has proven himself to be an effective and community-minded leader. While some may not agree with his progressive politics, that shouldn’t overshadow his substantial achievements and the positive impact he’s made in Downey.

The Downey Patriot believes that Mario Trujillo has earned another term, and he is by far the most qualified candidate in this race.

One of Trujillo’s key priorities has been public safety, and he has delivered in a big way. Under his leadership, Downey implemented a $25,000 recruitment bonus to attract lateral police officers. Additionally, he spearheaded efforts to enhance security in Downtown Downey by adding more lighting and installing security cameras with license plate readers in the parking structure. These measures help deter crime and provide critical tools for our law enforcement.

Trujillo also tackled the rise in catalytic converter thefts, a growing concern in communities throughout the region. He successfully passed legislation making it illegal to be in possession of a detached catalytic converter without proof of ownership, a smart move that helps law enforcement address this pervasive issue.

Beyond public safety, Trujillo has focused on bringing new businesses to Downey and supporting local economic growth. He played a pivotal role in helping recruit a Sprout’s grocery store, giving residents another quality option for fresh and healthy food. Most recently, he helped secure a family-friendly bowling alley and arcade to replace the vacant Sears store—breathing new life into a key commercial space that had sat empty for far too long.

Trujillo’s vision for Downey extends beyond the headline-grabbing initiatives. Less glamorous but just as important, he has championed substantial investments in our city’s infrastructure. Over the past three years, tens of millions of dollars have been allocated to repave our streets, alleys, and sidewalks. These improvements may not always be top of mind, but they directly improve the quality of life for residents and the long-term sustainability of our city.

Speaking of quality of life, Trujillo is firmly opposed to marijuana dispensaries, pawn shops, and the controversial Ojos Locos sports bar, consistent with his pledge four years ago to preserve Downey as a welcoming place to raise families.

It’s no secret that some in our community may not agree with Trujillo’s more progressive views. That’s the nature of local politics—rarely will an elected official be able to satisfy everyone. But to let political differences overshadow his achievements would be a disservice to the progress our city has made under his leadership.

Of the three candidates running for Downey’s District 5 seat, Mario Trujillo is by far the most qualified. His record of accomplishments, his leadership on the City Council, and his dedication to improving Downey for all its residents make him the clear choice.

In this election, let’s focus on the results and leadership that will guide Downey toward a bright future. Vote to re-elect Mario Trujillo to the Downey City Council.
