Earth Day celebration goes virtual

DOWNEY — A virtual Earth Day celebration will take place Saturday from 12-2:15 p.m. with a variety of guest speakers, including some from Downey. 

The event is being presented by the Whittier chapter of the United Nations Association and the Whittier Area Environmental Club. 

Whittier Mayor Joe Vinatieri is among the event’s scheduled speakers. 

“Community members will learn and engage in action-oriented ways to build a more sustainable lifestyle,” said Bianca Salgado, president of the United Nations Association, Whittier Chapter. “Our event offers free resources for all attendees and the opportunity to network with guest speakers from Whittier, Downey and Montebello.” 

There will be discussion on nutrition, transportation, land use, and community energy, with Zoom breakout discussions on each topic.

Three Downey High School students are serving as interns for the event: Madeline Hidalgo (community outreach and membership), Analy Moncada (graphic designer) and Julissa Rodriguez (communications and marketing).
