Earth Day celebrated locally

DOWNEY - The city of Downey is planning a series of events in commemoration of Earth Day on April 22.Throughout the month of April, middle schools will host Recycle Clubs where students enrolled in the ASPIRE after-school program will learn about the environment and use recycled materials for crafts and projects. Keep Downey Beautiful will host a clean-up event on April 16 at Independence Park. The clean-up begins at 9 a.m. and lasts one hour. On April 23 at 9 a.m., CalMet Services will host a mulch giveaway event at the Discovery Sports Complex. Residents must bring their own containers to receive up to 32 gallons of mulch. A recycling booth will also be set up, and used oil recycling containers will be distributed. Finally, at Kids Day on May 15, an environmental fair will feature approximately 15 environmental education and outreach booths.
