DUSD announces start of summer enrichment programs
DOWNEY – Beginning this week, Downey Unified has launched its summer enrichment programs for students.
This includes summer school at each high school, Extended School Year (ESY) programs, Summer 101 and STEAMworks.
Available at Columbus, Downey and Warren high schools, Doty Middle School and Alameda Elementary School, the ESY summer school program is available for students Monday through Thursday, from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
For the second year, an enrichment program that instructs students on the basis of Science, Technology, Engineering Arts and Mathematics, STEAMworks, is located at Price, Lewis and Unsworth elementary schools as well as Sussman Middle School, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to noon.
Summer 101, a program for students entering first through eighth grade, has proudly hit its full enrollment. This five week program is located at Stauffer Middle School, Monday through Thursday, from 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. with onsite YMCA childcare until 6 p.m.
Downey Unified is also participating in the Seamless Summer Food Service Program, providing meals without charge to all children, ages 18 and younger. Meal services are on a Monday through Thursday, with some school sites now providing meals on Fridays for the first time.
The following school sites and times are available for this program: breakfast only at Alameda Elementary School, from 8:30 a.m. to 9 a.m., and Doty Middle School, 9:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. (Mon-Thurs.) now through July 14, 2016; breakfast and lunch at Lewis, Price and Unsworth elementary schools (Mon.-Fri) starting on June 20 through July 15, from 7 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.; also serving both breakfast and lunch starting on June 20, Monday through Friday, is Sussman Middle School, from 8:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.; only serving lunch is Stauffer Middle School, starting on June 20 , Monday through Thursday, from noon to 12:30 p.m.; and finally Columbus, Downey and Warren high schools will be serving lunch now through July 21, 2016, from 11 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., Monday through Thursday only.
The Downey Unified School District office hours have also been altered during the summer, now open Monday through Thursday from 7:15 a.m. to 4:15 p.m.
