Downey woman working to make cruises safer

DOWNEY – Georgia Gonos Ananias, a former teacher and principal in the Downey Unified School District, has been elected to the Board of Directors of the International Cruise Victims Association. Ananias and her family were on the ill-fated Costa Concordia cruise ship that nearly sank in Italy. They were the last people to get off the sinking ship.

The five family members wrote a book about their escape called “SOS Spirit of Survival.”

The International Cruise Victims Association advocates for legislative reform to protect cruise ship passengers from crimes and to keep passengers and crew members safe and secure while on board a cruise ship.

“Unfortunately, the safety and the health of passengers on cruise ships is not the number one priority for cruise companies,” Georgia Ananias said.
