Downey, Warren start thinking playoffs as basketball season hits mid-mark

DOWNEY – The Downey High School boys’ basketball team currently has an overall record of 12-9 and are 1-3 in San Gabriel Valley League play. The Vikings were defeated by Dominguez at Downey in their league opener 46-44 on 1/11. 

Downey was then defeated by Lynwood at Lynwood 63-57 on 1/13, defeated cross-town rival Warren at Downey 53-34 on 1/18 and were defeated by Gahr at Downey 63-58 on 1/20. Downey’s three league losses thus far have come by a total of 13 points.

The Vikings traveled to Paramount (3-16, 0-3) on Wednesday to face the Pirates (score unavailable at press time) and will travel to Dominguez for their rematch tonight. Downey will travel to Sylmar (9-11, 5-2) tomorrow for a non-league game before they host Lynwood (5-14, 1-2) on Wednesday and travel to Warren (8-12, 1-3) next Friday. 

Downey has been led this season on offense by a trio of seniors. Brian Chavez has averaged 14.6 points per game, Justin Reyes has averaged 14.3 points per game and Aaron Garcia has averaged 11.6 points per game. Senior Jesse Medina has averaged 5.9 rebounds per game and Brian Chavez has averaged 3.4 assists per game running the offense.

As league play is nearing the midway point the standings are as follows: Gahr is 4-0, Dominguez is 4-0, Lynwood is 1-2, Downey is 1-3, Warren is 1-3 and Paramount is 0-3. 

Coach Shelton, his staff and players are all looking forward to the second round of league play, finishing up strong and making a playoff run.

Warren was then defeated by Gahr at Warren 71-48 on 1/13, was defeated by cross-town rival Downey at Downey 53-34 on 1/18 and was defeated by Dominguez at Warren 79-66 on 1/20.

The Bears traveled to Lynwood (5-14, 1-2) on Wednesday to face the Knights (score unavailable at press time) and will host Paramount (0-3, 3-16) tonight to start the second round of league play. The Bears will travel to Gahr (13-8, 4-0) on Wednesday and will host cross-town rival Downey (12-9, 1-3) next Friday in their much anticipated rematch. 

Warren has been led this season on offense by senior Deveone’s Jones’ 15.7 points per game. Jones has also led the Bears with 8.8 rebounds per game. Senior point guard John Nicolas has ran the Bear offense and is averaging 2 assists per game.

Downey was then defeated by the Lynwood Lady Knights at Lynwood 65-59 on 1/13, defeated the cross-town rival Warren Lady Bears at Downey 49-34 on 1/18 and defeated the Gahr Lady Gladiators at Downey 74-40 on 1/20.

The Lady Vikings traveled to Paramount (4-8, 1-3) on Wednesday to face the Lady Pirates (score unavailable at press time) and will travel to Dominguez to face the Lady Dons tonight. Downey will host Lynwood (8-11, 4-0) on Wednesday and will travel to Warren (12-8, 3-1) next Friday for their much anticipated rematch. 

Downey has been led this season on offense by senior Naelene Garcia’s 11.7 points per game. Seniors Lynette Garcia and Danise Herrington have averaged 6.5 and 6.4 rebounds per game, respectively, and sophomore point guard Surie Camacho has averaged 4.2 assists per game running the offense.

Warren then defeated Gahr at Warren 54-38 on 1/13, was defeated by cross-town rival Downey at Downey 49-34 on 1/18 and defeated Dominguez at Warren 67-20 on 1/20.

The Lady Bears traveled to Lynwood (8-11, 4-0) on Wednesday to face the Lady Knights (score unavailable at press time) and will host the Paramount Lady Pirates (4-8, 1-3) tonight to start the second round of league play.
