Downey, Warren split softball season series
DOWNEY - The Downey High School softball team currently has an overall record of 17-6-1 and league record of 5-1.The lone Viking loss came at the hands of cross-town rival Warren 8-4 last Thursday at Downey in the much anticipated rematch. Downey has split the season series with Warren as they defeated Warren 4-3 in ten innings three weeks ago in the league opener for both teams. If both teams win all of their remaining league games, Warren will get the number one seed in the S.G.V.L. due to their win in the second round of league play. Coach Karzen says that senior right fielder Desirae Romero is hitting the ball well and has played stellar defense all season. Junior pitcher Ale Guillen has been strong all year as well as former East Knight Alexis Zavala at shortstop. Coach Karzen also stated that junior and former East Knight Anissa Urtez is having a consistently outstanding season at the plate and on defense as well. Karzen went on to say that he would be surprised if anyone is having a better season anywhere in Southern California than Urtez is having right now. Karzen further said that Urtez has been crushing the ball all year and in his opinion, "is the best player around." Coach Karzen concluded by saying that this has been a very competitive season and that the split with Warren tells it all, each game coming down to one or two plays to determine the outcome of the games.
