DOWNEY –  Downey Unified began a partnership with a local non-profit this week to provide free eye glasses and exams to qualified students. 

The first collaboration between Downey Unified and Visiion To Learn took place Tuesday at Lewis Elementary, where more than 40 students received no-cost eye exams. Students who were deemed in need of glasses will receive them free.

“We are beyond grateful for the partnership with Vision To Learn,” said Downey Unified’s director of Student Services, Kathy Succa. “This is an exciting day for our students who will now have the opportunity to see clearly and perform better in class.”

The Vision To Learn mobile eye exam vehicle will be traveling across Downey Unified in the coming months to service students in need. They will be visiting all elementary and middle schools, as well as Columbus High School.

Vision To Learn is a non-profit organization that provides free eye exams and free glasses to children in low-income communities. 

Vision To Learn’s mobile clinics, staffed with licensed optometrists, visit schools and youth service programs and have examined nearly 50,000 kids and provided over 37,000 pairs of glasses free of charge to children in California, Delaware and Hawaii since 2012.
