Downey Library's August auction items
DOWNEY – The Friends of the Downey City Library holds monthly silent-bid auctions to raise money for library programs. The book auction items for the summer months include:
“Maui Murders” (a murder mystery that takes place on the North Shores of Maui and introduces us to a great cast of characters, written by library volunteer Kathy Callahan. Perhaps she will autograph the book if you bring it in to the Friends bookstore on Mondays between 2-4 p.m.);
“Down at the End of Lonely Street” and “Elvis Presley-Unseen Archives” (the definitive history of one of the most famous entertainers of the 20th century; includes a photographic archive);
“John Carter of Mars-The First Five Novels” (Edgar Rice Burroughs brings his own special touch to the pulp-fiction genre, creating his own heroes, villains, creatures and civilizations in a great adventure);
“Ellis Island-An Illustrated History of the Immigrant Experience” (Ellis Island-the portal to a new land and life for more than 12 million immigrants from 1892-1924...their story in pictures and text);
“The Vision of Frank Lloyd Wright” (a concise consideration of his life and work offers new insight into his complex character…many photographs of him, his family and his creations);
“Iron Horse to Promontory” (the story of those huge engines that made railroad travel possible);
“America Yesterday & Today” (a collection of photographic icons, old and new, celebrating America’s changes and similarities);
“Out with the Stars-Hollywood Nightlife in the Golden Era” (a romantic and nostalgic look back at the fabulous nightclubs and palaces of entertainment in the heyday of the film capital from 1015-1945);
“Van Gogh’s Flowers” (a celebration of the artist’s love of flowers);
“Paula Deen’s Kitchen Classics” (combines all the recipes that made two of her cooking classics a must for any cook working with southern dishes);
“The Wonders of Life-The Amazing World of Nature” (Life Books travels around the globe and to the depths of the oceans…amazing pictures and related stories);
“Ancient Civilizations” (the life and times of our greatest ancestors).
Items have opening bids from $5-$10 and are on display in the library lobby. Bids can be made through noon, Saturday, August 25th, on cards in the Friend’s Bookstore located in the young adult section of the library.
