Downey Library’s April auction items
DOWNEY – The Friends of the Downey City Library holds monthly silent-bid auctions to raise money for library programs. The book auction items this month include:
“Lost Moon-The Perilous Voyage of Apollo 13” (an hour by hour look into the almost ill-fated mission);
“A Crack in the Edge of the World” and “Denial Disaster” (two books tell the story of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and its far-reaching aftermath);
“Tales from Shakespeare” (ten classic plays retold with illustrations);
“How We Got to Now-Six Inventions That Made the Modern World” (explores the history of innovation over centuries, tracing six key technologies of modern life);
“Andrew Jackson and the Miracle of New Orleans” (history comes alive with a true story that brings a new understanding of one of one of America’s great, history changing battles);
“The West-An Illustrated History” (tells the story of a unique part of the country, includes many historical pictures);
“World Poetry-An Anthology of Verse from Antiquity to Our Times” (more than 1600 poems drawn from dozens of languages and cultures spanning 4000 years);
“Camera-A History of Photography” (from the first faint images of 1826 to the images snapped by today’s cellphones…hundreds of cameras and historic pictures);
“The Comfort Table” (Paula Deen’s guide to creating unforgettable meals for occasions big and small);
“Garden Flowers” (plans and ideas for large and small gardens with 500 color photos);
“Titanic-The Ship of Dreams” (a pop-up book), “National Geographic Dec. 1985 & 1986” and “Music as Heard on the Fateful Voyage”
“Divinely Elegant-The World of Ernst Dryden” (one of the most famous fashion designer and poster artist of his time-includes many examples of his work and the story of his life).
Items have opening bids from $5-$8 and are on display in the library lobby. Bids can be made through noon, Saturday, April 28, on cards in the Friend’s Bookstore located in the young adult section of the library.
