Downey launches program to check on seniors

DOWNEY — City of Downey workers are available to check in on seniors who are vulnerable during the COVID-19 outbreak.

With city events canceled or postponed, workers from Downey’s Parks and Recreation Department are calling seniors enrolled in the city’s Senior Congregate Meal Program.

If a senior can’t be reached within a 12-hour period, a city employee will conduct an on-site visit. Staff will contact police if they can’t contact the senior either by phone or in person.

Senior citizens who would like to enroll in the program should call (562) 904-7238.

“It is critical during this unprecedented time that we check on the wellbeing of our senior population,” said Mayor Blanca Pacheco. “We want to ensure they are healthy and have the essential items they need while they stay at home.”

“A key mission of the City of Downey is to ensure the safety of our community, and I’m proud to see our City take proactive measures to protect our seniors,” added Mayor-Pro Tem Claudia Frometa.
