Downey hosting anniversary celebration

DOWNEY – Downey is turning 150 this year and the city is throwing a party to celebrate.

The celebration is planned for Saturday, Oct. 14, from 5-8 pm in the civic center. The outdoor event will feature food trucks, festival attractions, a classic car show, arts and crafts, performers, and live music.

Historical photos and film will be displayed at the festival.

Downey was founded in 1873 by John Downey, an Irish immigrant. The city grew over the next several decades and by the 1950s, Downey had a population of 90,000-plus and was a leader in the aviation industry.
