Downey High robotics team honored by Janice Hahn

L.A. County Supervisor Janice Hahn celebrated Pi Day on Tuesday with Downey High School’s robotics team, the Striking Vikings.
 
The Striking Vikings, winners of last year’s LA Regional All Star Award, spend their afternoons and weekends building and programming highly advanced robots which compete in various obstacle courses against teams from all around the world.
 
Over two dozen students and members of the Striking Vikings enjoyed pies from Long Beach’s The Pie Bar before receiving honorary scrolls for their accomplishments in engineering and mathematics.
 
“Quitting cheer and joining the robotics team was one of the best decisions of my high school career,” said Team Captain Lizette Chavez at the board meeting.
 
“These students are so impressive,” said Hahn. “Downey High is doing great work getting kids interested in STEM fields. Today we celebrated these hardworking students and their dedication to math and science over my favorite dessert-- pie.”
 
Classrooms from all around the nation celebrate Pi Day with pie on March 14, or 3.14, the first three digits of the mathematical constant Pi. The holiday is a lighthearted and fun way to spark student’s lifelong interest in mathematics.
