Downey High girls lacrosse on heat streak in league play
DOWNEY – The Downey High School girls’ lacrosse team currently has an overall record 8-1 and are 5-0 in Ocean League play.
Downey defeated El Segundo 14-1 at El Segundo on 3/22 and defeated Santa Monica at Downey 13-2 on 3/24. The Lady Vikings will travel to Tustin later today for their game against the Lady Tillers.
The Lady Vikings have been led this season by Natalie Hernandez’s 34 goals, Marissa Lopez’s 28 goals and Danielle Urtez’s 19 goals. Downey is certainly scoring a lot of goals and putting the ball in the back of the net. The Lady Viking defense has performed well also by only allowing eight goals in their past three games.
Marissa Lopez has 21 assists, and Natalie Hernandez and Emyly Rodriguez have 12 assists each. The Lady Vikings appear to be well on their way to earning another Ocean League title. Downey finished last season with an overall record of 12-5 and an undefeated Ocean League record of 6-0.
Coach Mires, his staff and players are all looking forward to league play and remaining undefeated.
■ The Warren High School boys’ volleyball team currently has an overall record of 7-5 and began S.G.V.L. play on Tuesday when they defeated Gahr at Warren 3-1.
Warren competed in the St. John Bosco Varsity Tournament last weekend where they finished with a record of 3-1.
The Bears were defeated by Valencia 2-1 on 3/24, defeated Los Altos 2-0 on 3/25 in the silver bracket quarterfinal, defeated Gahr 2-0 on 3/25 in the silver bracket semifinal and defeated cross-town rival Downey 2-0 on 3/25 in the silver bracket final. Warren is now on a roll having won seven of their last nine matches and look to continue that solid play in league action.
Warren traveled to Downey yesterday (score unavailable at press time), will host Dominguez next Tuesday and will travel to Lynwood next Thursday. Coach Lane, his staff and players are all looking forward to league play and a playoff run.
The Bears finished last season with an overall record of 24-7 and a league record of 8-2. The Bears were defeated by Cathedral in the third round of the C.I.F. Division 3 playoffs. Gahr will once again be the team to beat in league play.
■ The Downey High School softball team currently has an overall record of 6-8 and will begin San Gabriel Valley League play next Tuesday when they host Dominguez. The Lady Vikings will also travel to Lynwood for their game against the Lady Knights on Thursday.
Downey competed in the Torrance TNT Tournament two weeks ago and finished with a record of 2-3. Downey defeated Torrance 6-5 in their first game on 3/14, defeated St. Anthony 9-8 in their second game on 3/15, were defeated by Coronado of Henderson, Nevada 10-3 in their third game on 3/17, were defeated by Golden Valley of Santa Clarita 5-0 in their fourth game on 3/18 and were defeated by Carson 9-5 in their fifth and final game on 3/18 as well.
The Lady Vikings will travel to California next Monday and will begin league play the following day at home against Dominguez. Coach Karzen, his staff and players are all looking forward to the start of league play. Downey finished last season with an overall record of 16-15 and 6-4 in league play.
Gahr and cross-town rival Warren will once again be the teams to beat.
■ Downey High School standout sophomore point guard Surie Camacho was selected to the All-C.I.F. Second Team.
Camacho averaged 9.1 points per game, 2.5 rebounds per game and 4.6 assists per game in leading the Lady Vikings to a 22-7 overall record and 9-1 San Gabriel Valley League record. Downey was a co-champion with Lynwood.
■ The Warren High School softball team currently has an overall record of 5-4 and will begin S.G.V.L. play when they travel to Paramount next Tuesday. The Bears were swept in a double header against La Palma Kennedy at La Palma Kennedy 11-4 and 13-1 on March 23 and swept Millikan at Warren in a double header 1-0 in eight innings and 1-0 on 3/27.
Warren will be competing in the La Mirada Showcase Tournament this weekend. Opponents are determined as the brackets develop. The Bears will host Gahr next Thursday and will travel to cross-town rival Downey on April 11.
Coach Starksen, her staff and players are all looking forward to the start of league play. Warren finished in second place last year behind league champion Gahr. Downey and Gahr will once again be the teams to beat.
■ The Warren High School baseball team currently has an overall record of 7-2 and will begin S.G.V.L. play when they travel to Paramount next Tuesday and when they host Paramount next Friday. The Bears defeated Cantwell-Sacred Heart at Cantwell-Sacred Heart 3-1 last Saturday.
Warren started the Beaumont Baseball Classic Wednesday against Aquinas of San Bernardino and then played Jurupa Hills yesterday (scores unavailable at press time). The Bears will play Royal later today.
Warren will continue league play when they host Gahr on 4/11 and when they travel to Gahr on 4/13. The Bears will then travel to Downey on 4/25 and then host the Vikings on 4/28. Coach Pearson, his staff and players are all looking forward to the start of league play.
