Downey has inside track to win league championship

DOWNEY – The Downey High School baseball team currently has an overall record of 12-9-1 and a San Gabriel Valley League record of 5-0. The Vikings are currently unbeaten in league play and have earned the inside track to the league title.

In non-league play Downey was defeated by Mayfair at Mayfair 2-1 in eight innings on April 2nd and was defeated by Edison at Edison 2-0 on April 4th.

Downey defeated cross-town rival Warren at Downey 4-2 on April 9th and traveled to Warren yesterday for their highly-anticipated rematch (score unavailable at press time). The Vikings will host Gahr at Downey next Wednesday and will travel to Gahr next Friday to complete this season’s home and away series. Downey will conclude league play when they travel to Paramount on April 22nd and when they host the Pirates at Downey on April 24th.

At the time of this writing, Downey is in first place with a record of 5-0, Warren is in second place with a record of 6-2, Paramount and Gahr are tied for third place with records of 2-1, Dominguez is in fifth place with a record of 0-5 and Lynwood is in sixth place with a record of 0-6.

Coach Gonzalez, his staff and players are all looking forward to finishing league play on a strong note and qualifying for the C.I.F. Division 3 playoffs.


WARREN BASEBALL:
The Warren High School baseball team currently has an overall record of 21-6 and a San Gabriel Valley League record of 6-2. The Bears competed in the Santa Ana Elks Tournament March 30th-April 3rd where they finished with a record of 1-3.

Warren was defeated by Loyola of Los Angeles 6-2 in their first game on March 30th, was defeated by Village Christian of Sun Valley 11-2 in their second game on April 1st, was defeated by Villa Park 10-9 in their third game on April 2nd and defeated Northwood of Irvine 9-5 in their fourth and final game on April 3rd.

In league play, the Bears were defeated by cross-town rival Downey at Downey 4-2 on Tuesday and hosted Downey at Warren yesterday in their rematch (score unavailable at press time). Warren is scheduled to play Magnolia at Magnolia tomorrow and will host Kennedy at Warren next Wednesday.

The Bears will conclude their regular season schedule when they host Gahr at Warren on April 22nd and when they travel to Gahr on April 24th. Warren is currently in second place in league play, behind Downey (5-0), respectively.

DOWNEY SOFTBALL:
The Downey High School softball team currently has an overall record of 11-12 and a league record of 4-1.

The Lady Vikings defeated cross-town rival Warren at Downey 10-0 in five innings on April 4. Downey scored two runs in the first inning, no runs in the second inning, one run in the third inning, four runs in the fourth inning and three runs in the fifth inning to clinch the win.

In the Downey/Warren game Lady Viking pitcher Hailey Harris pitched a complete game shutout and recorded seven strikeouts in the win. Destiny Garcia went 3 for 4 with 2 RBI, Harris went 1 for 3 with a walk and 2 RBI and Alyssa Porras had 2 walks with a 2-run homerun. Angelina Dumlao went 1 for 3 with an RBI, Joeie Gallardo went 1 for 3 with an RBI and Ariana Hamilton went 2 for 3 with an RBI.

In non-league play, Downey competed in the Michelle Carew Classic over the past two weekends. The Lady Vikings were 0-2 in their first two games last weekend and were defeated by Murrieta Mesa 3-1 at 11:00 a.m. on April 5th and defeated Poway 5-1 at 5:30 p.m. on the same day. The Lady Vikings were then defeated by Buena 9-8 at 1:00 p.m. in their fifth and final game on April 6th. Downey finished the Carew Classic with a record of 1-4.

Gahr is currently first in league play with a record of 4-0, Downey is second in league play with a record of 4-1, Warren is third in league play with a record of 2-2, Paramount is fourth in league play with a record of 1-2, Lynwood is fifth in league play with a record of 1-4 and Dominguez is sixth in league play with a record of 0-3. Coach Garcia, his staff and players need to defeat Gahr at Gahr on April 24th to clinch at least a share of the S.G.V.L. title.


WARREN SOFTBALL:
The Warren High School softball team currently has an overall record of 9-10 and a San Gabriel Valley League record of 2-2. The Bears competed in the La Mirada Tournament, which took place over two weekends, and finished with a record of 2-2.

Warren was defeated by Cajon of San Bernardino 6-2 in their first game on March 23rd, defeated Diamond Ranch of Pomona 7-6 in eight innings in their second game, also on March 23rd, defeated Millikan 5-3 in their third game on March 30th and was defeated by Chino 3-1 in their fourth and final game, also on March 30th.

In league play, Warren was defeated by Gahr at Warren 7-3 on April 2nd and was defeated by cross-town rival Downey at Downey 10-0 on April 4th. The Bears will host Lynwood at Warren on April 11th, will host Paramount at Warren on April 6th, will travel to Gahr on April 18th and will host Downey at Warren on April 22nd.

In non-league play, Warren is currently competing in the Thousand Oaks Tournament April 6th and 13th. Warren defeated Agoura 10-4 at 11:00 a.m. in their first game on April 6th and was defeated by Thousand Oaks 4-2 at 1:00 p.m. in their second game, also on April 6th.

The Bears are scheduled to play Royal at 12:00 p.m. in their third game and a “to be determined” opponent in their fourth and final game of the Thousand Oaks Tournament tomorrow. Coach Starksen, her staff and players are all looking forward to finishing league play on a strong note and qualifying for the C.I.F. Division 3 playoffs.
