Downey girls look to build momentum ahead of league opener

The Downey High School girls’ basketball team currently has an overall record of 3-3 and will begin S.G.V.L. play on January 8th. The Lady Vikings were defeated at Bishop Amat, 62-54, in their season opener on November 21.

The Lady Vikings also competed in the Downey Classic Tournament at Downey, where they finished with a record of 2-2, November 25th-30th. Downey defeated La Serna at Downey 55-46 on December 2nd.

In the Downey Classic Tournament, the Lady Vikings were defeated by JSerra Catholic 59-38 in their first game on November 25th, defeated St. Anthony’s 49-47 in their second game on November 26th, defeated South Torrance 44-37 in their third game on November 29th and were defeated by JSerra Catholic 64-26 in their fourth and final game on November 30th.

The Lady Vikings will be competing in the Spartan Classic Tournament at Orangewood Academy December 10th-14th. Downey is scheduled to play Esperanza in their first game on December 10th, Long Beach Wilson in their second game on December 11th, Orangewood Academy in their third game on December 12th and a “to be determined” opponent on December 14th depending on tournament results.

Downey will begin San Gabriel Valley League play on January 8th when they travel to Gahr to play the Lady Gladiators. The Lady Vikings will travel to cross-town rival Warren on January 22nd for the first of their two scheduled league meetings.

Downey finished last season with an overall record of 22-7 and a league record of 9-1. The Lady Vikings were defeated by Ventura 42-37 in the first round of the C.I.F. Division One playoffs.

Coach Harris, his staff and players are all looking forward to the 2019-20 basketball season.

WARREN BOYS SOCCER: The Warren High School boys’ soccer team currently has an overall record of 0-0-1 after playing Buena Park to a 2-2 draw on Monday.

In that game, each team scored a goal in the first half and both teams scored a goal in the second half to earn the tie. The Bears played Anaheim at Warren on Wednesday (score unavailable at press time).

Warren will be participating in the Adidas West Coast Showcase where they are scheduled to play Chandler of Arizona on December 12th and Loyola of Los Angeles on December 14th. The Bears are also scheduled to travel to Mayfair to play the Monsoons on December 20th in another preseason matchup.

Warren will begin San Gabriel Valley League play when they host Lynwood at Warren on January 9th. The Bears will travel to Bell Gardens on January 11th in a non-league game, will host Paramount at Warren on January 14th and will travel to Gahr to play the Gladiators on January 16th.

Warren will then travel to cross-town rival Downey on January 21st for the first of their two scheduled league meetings.

Warren finished last season with an overall record of 7-15-2 and a league record of 4-6. The Bears are looking to rebound from last season with a strong comeback.

Coach Pena, his staff and players are all looking forward to the start of the 2019-20 soccer season, competing for a league title and qualifying for C.I.F. postseason play. Paramount and Warren will once again be the teams to beat in league play.

WARREN GIRLS BASKETBALL: The Warren High School girls’ basketball team currently has an overall record of 0-4 and will begin San Gabriel Valley League play on January 8th when they travel to Dominguez to play the Lady Dons.

Warren recently competed in the Battle of the Beach Tournament at Redondo Beach High School where they finished 0-3.

In Redondo Beach, the Lady Bears were defeated by Orangewood Academy of Garden Grove 87-22 in their first game on November 25th, were defeated by Bishop Montgomery 85-37 in their second game on November 27th and were defeated by Troy of Fullerton 82-29 in their third and final game on November 29th.

Warren is currently competing at the Ocean View Tournament in Huntington Beach. The Lady Bears were defeated by Tustin 56-32 in their first game on Tuesday and played El Toro in their second game on Wednesday (score unavailable at press time). The Lady Bears are also scheduled to play La Serna at La Serna on December 12th and Whittier at Whittier on December 13th in other preseason action.

As mentioned earlier, Warren will travel to Dominguez for their league opener in early January and will later travel to cross-town rival Downey on January 22nd for the first of their two scheduled league meetings.

The Lady Bears finished last season with an overall record of 12-15 and a league record of 5-5. Warren advanced to the quarterfinal round of the C.I.F. Division 2AA playoffs before being eliminated by Rolling Hills Prep, 57-26.

DOWNEY GIRLS SOCCER: The Downey High School girls’ soccer team currently has an overall record of 0-0-1 after playing to a 1-1 draw against Bishop Amat on Tuesday at Downey.

The Lady Vikings traveled to Santiago of Corona yesterday (score unavailable at press time) and will host Long Beach Poly at Downey tomorrow. The Lady Vikings will host the Bellflower Lady Buccaneers at Downey on December 17th in another preseason matchup.

Downey will begin San Gabriel Valley League play when they host Gahr at Downey on January 7th. The Lady Vikings will travel to Paramount on January 9th and are scheduled to host cross-town rival Warren on January 21st for the first of their two highly anticipated league matches.

Downey finished last season with an overall record of 17-7-5 and a league record of 8-1-1. The Lady Vikings were defeated by Flintridge Sacred Heart 1-0 in the semifinal round of the C.I.F. Division Three playoffs and by Grossmont by the same 1-0 score in the C.I.F. Southern California Regional Tournament.

Coach Javier Aguiniga Campos, his staff and players are all looking forward to the start of the 2019-20 soccer season and making a run at a league title and postseason playoff spot. Warren will once again be the team to beat in league play.
