Downey Chamber announces speakers for Women’s Empowerment Conference

Martha Sodetani will be one of four speakers at the Women’s Empowerment Conference scheduled for March 7 at the Rio Hondo Event Center.

DOWNEY — The Downey Chamber of Commerce has announced an inspiring lineup of speakers for its upcoming Women’s Empowerment Conference, set to take place on Friday, March 7, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Rio Hondo Event Center.

The event, themed “Strong Women. Strong World.”, will showcase local women who have made significant impacts in business, law enforcement, advocacy, and community service.

Meet the Speakers

Sarah Sarofeem (One12Caffe)

At just 19 years old, Sarah Sarofeem is already making her mark as an entrepreneur. A Downey native, she and her brother recently launched One12Caffe, a new local coffee shop. A student at Cal State Long Beach majoring in hospitality management, Sarah’s journey reflects resilience and ambition. A former Miss Downey 2023, she has also been part of the Downey Dance Team and the Downey Rose Float Court.

Sgt. Ruth Valenzuela (Downey Police Department)

With a career spanning nearly two decades in law enforcement, Sgt. Ruth Valenzuela is a respected figure in the Downey Police Department. She joined the department in 2007 and steadily climbed the ranks, becoming a sergeant in 2022. Notably, she played a key role in launching Downey PD’s first facility dog program, partnering with a dog named Howdy to assist the department in community outreach and wellness initiatives.

Julie Garcia (Community Advocate & Legal Support Professional)

A lifelong Downey resident, Julie Garcia has over 25 years of experience in mentorship, gang prevention, and youth development programs. She currently serves as a banquet hall director at the A Mi Hacienda locations in Los Angeles and Orange County and works with the Law Offices of Alex Saab, assisting clients through the legal process. Her commitment to the community has earned her multiple honors, including the Gangs Out of Downey Volunteer of the Year Award and the City of Downey Mayor’s Legacy Award.

Martha Sodetani (Child Advocate & Former Board of Education Member)

A 17-year veteran of the Downey Board of Education, Martha Sodetani has long been dedicated to education and child advocacy. She has contributed to various organizations, including IILA (International Institute of Los Angeles) and the Assistance League of Downey. Before settling in Downey in the 1970s, she worked with Liga International (Flying Doctors of Mercy), helping deliver medical aid to remote villages in Mexico.
