Downey boy helps save the world in Snickers' Super Bowl ad

DOWNEY — Everybody knows that the Super Bowl is less about the game on the field and more about the star-studded commercials between plays.

That is, everyone except maybe for 11-year-old Steven Gomez; he’d been in commercials before, yet didn’t realize just how big a deal his most recent work was.

Steven, a student at Unsworth Elementary School, entered the entertainment business when he was just five years old. Gomez’s mom, Elizabeth, said that her son’s acting career began as a way to add to his college fund.

While he’s done a smattering of print and tv / short work, commercials tend to be his forte. Naturally, it was only a matter of time before he’d take his place during the biggest sporting event of the year.

“I got an audition request for the commercial a while back,” said Steven. “I did it, I got the call back, and eventually I got it.”

Steven has previously done around seven commercials, including one for Honda that is currently out.

“My first commercial I did with my family…it was for TJ Maxx,” said Steven.

The Super Bowl ad was definitely the biggest he’s done, however.

Steven was part of the commercial for Snickers, which featured hundreds of extras and celebrities coming together to offer up an oversized candy bar in an attempt to fix the world’s problems.

He even gets a line in the full version of the commercial.

However, when he hit the airwaves on Sunday, Gomez wasn’t even watching the game; he was in his room, playing with his cousin.

In fact, when he’s not dropping Snickers bars into pits for the sake of world peace, he’s just your ordinary kid; he’s a shortstop on his baseball team at Northwest Downey Little League, he participates in robotics clubs at school, he plays Minecraft with his friends online.

Obviously still very young and with his future still miles ahead of him, Steven hasn’t completely decided if he will pursue acting as a career.

He hasn’t completely ruled it out though.

“I haven’t fully decided,” said Steven. “If I want to, I can definitely do that though…becoming a full-time actor is definitely something I’m considering. I’ve already got a pretty good start.”
