DOWNEY — The annual Dia de los Muertos art festival, which regularly draws thousands of visitors to Downey’s civic center, has been cancelled this year due to construction at the library and Downey Theatre.

This year would have marked Downey’s seventh consecutive Dia de los Muertos festival, which routinely featured altar displays, art exhibits, artisan demonstrations, and even a film festival.

The Downey City Library is currently closed due to a 15-month renovation project and work is expected to begin later this year on the Downey Theatre’s courtyard and patio.

According to the Downey Theatre, the Dia de los Muertos festival attracted 35,000 people annually.

The festival will return in 2020, theater officials said.
