David Spilsbury Jr. passes away
DOWNEY – David Francis Spilsbury Jr. was born June 12, 1937 in Los Angeles to David Francis Spilsbury Sr. and Helen Denton. He passed away July 9 in Downey, where he resided with his family for over 57 years.
He was preceded in death by his wife Nancy, his parents, sisters Leona and Avier, and brother Walter. He is survived by his three sons Daniel (Caren), Gary (Lisa) and Carl; grandchildren Daniel Jr (Alicia), Aubrey, Michelle (Angel), Ronnie (Vanessa), Kaleigh, Jessica, Annabelle, Gwen and many great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was known to many as Uncle Bud or just Bud. David graduated from Roosevelt High School in Los Angeles in 1955 and then spent time as a U.S. Marine Reserve. He met his wife Nancy whom he married on April 8, 1961 in Downey at the First Presbyterian Church. They bought their first home in Downey where they lived together their entire married life.
He was active in the Imperial Eights Square Dance Group and helped direct the Warren High School Bear Bingo Boosters. David spent his early career in the jewelry business, eventually having his own store in downtown Los Angeles.
While battling cancer in the late 1980’s he closed his business and went back into the workforce for VPSI, Commuter Vanpools where he was known as “Super Dave” because of his strong work ethic and willingness to get the job done. David retired from VPSI in 2013, and continued spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
David had a love for camping and playing poker. Owning a variety of motor homes over his life, almost every family vacation was spent traveling, camping and there was always a card game going on.
Services for David will be on Friday, July 20, at 1 p.m. at Dignity Miller-Mies Mortuary at 10229 Paramount Blvd, Downey CA. Reception will follow at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 12138 Front St. Norwalk CA.
Interment will be on Tuesday, July 24, 11 a.m. at Downey Cemetery, 9073 Gardendale St. Downey CA.
