CROP Hunger Walk raises thousands to fight hunger

DOWNEY – Walkers numbering over 180 participated in the 6th Annual Downey CROP Hunger Walk on Sunday, Oct. 14, joining local churches, businesses and organizations to raise funds and collect canned foods for local and global food programs.

“Hunger strikes people of all races and genders, all ages and faiths. Downey came together from all backgrounds to demonstrate we’re willing to help others. It was good to see more walkers this year and encourage more churches and organizations to join us next year,” said Beth Gendreau, Chairperson for the CROP WALK.

Mayor Pro Tem Rick Rodriguez and Pastor Daphne Gascot Arias, from Downey Memorial Christian Church, expressed their appreciation to everyone for their participation to help two local food programs, PTA H.E.L.P.S, and FOOD HELPS at Downey First Christian Church, and Church World Service.

Downey Memorial Christian Church, Girl Scout Troop 1045, Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church and School, Downey First Christian Church, Downey United Methodist Church, Boy Scout Troop 2, Living Tree Foundation and Downey Police Explorers participated in the event.

Downey Federal Credit Union, Farmers and Merchants Bank, Grocery Outlet, Coca-Cola and Porto’s Bakery & Cafe assisted in the day’s success with their sponsorship.

The Walk started and ended at Downey Memorial Christian Church. The walkers, volunteers and sponsors raised $3,433 and a canned food drive was included.
