Crime Report, Sept. 14, 2015

Thursday, Sept. 3:
At 3:00 a.m., officers responded to a burglar alarm at the Marketplace Grill (7877 Florence). Despite arriving within 1 minute of being dispatched, officers found that the business had been broken into and that the suspect(s) had stolen the safe.  

Friday, Sept. 4:
At 1:30 a.m., officers arrested a 22-year-old Downey man in the 11500 block of Horton after he choked his girlfriend during an argument, almost causing her to pass out. He was booked for domestic violence, a felony, and then transported to the Los Angeles County Jail.     

At 3:00 a.m., officers responded to the 8600 block of Guatemala after receiving a report of a vehicle burglary in progress. Officers stopped the suspects as they attempted to drive away from the scene. The three occupants, all residents of Los Angeles, were identified as the culprits and were still in possession of property they had just stolen from the victim’s car. All three were booked for burglary.  

At 3:45 p.m., two brothers got into an argument in the 12500 block of Rose. During the argument, one brother stabbed the other brother with a sharp object and then fled the scene. The victim was treated at a local hospital for minor injuries. The suspect was located and booked for assault with a deadly weapon.   

At 8:00 p.m., a woman was returning to her vehicle after shopping and saw her vehicle driving out of the Stonewood Shopping Center parking lot. Police were notified and located the stolen car driving northbound on Paramount at 5th Street. Officers stopped the car and arrested the driver, a 33-year-old man from Los Angeles. The suspect used an altered key to steal the car. He was booked for Grand Theft Auto.

As part of an Office of Traffic Safety Grant, Downey officers conducted a DUI/Driver License checkpoint at Imperial & Rives from 9:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. One driver was arrested for drunk driving and another for being in possession of a nitrous tank. Fifty-seven drivers were cited for being unlicensed and an additional 15 drivers were cited for driving on a suspended driver’s license. Eighteen vehicles were impounded.

Saturday, Sept. 5:
At 6:00 p.m., officers observed two subjects drinking alcohol in a car at Rio San Gabriel Park.  Both were issued misdemeanor citations and will have to appear in court for their actions.

At 6:00 p.m., officers arrested four suspects for attempted burglary after they were caught trying to break into Planet Dental (8843 Rosecrans). Witnesses reported seeing the suspects attempting to break into the rear door of the business. The suspects were unsuccessful in gaining entry into the business, though they did cause some damage to the property in their attempt to do so. Tools used in the burglary were also found at the scene. All four suspects were transported to the Los Angeles County Jail after being booked.    

Sunday, Sept. 6:
At 8:00 a.m., officers pursued a vehicle wanted in an aggravated assault from Old River School Road & Firestone to the area of Tecum and Gainford. The suspect then abandoned his vehicle and attempted to flee on foot, but was caught by pursuing officers. He was booked for reckless evading, a felony, and later transported to the Los Angeles County Jail.
