Crime Report: May 4, 2016
Thursday, April 21:
At 11:30 a.m., an explosion occurred inside the laundry mat located at 10303 ½ Lakewood. Downey Police and Downey Fire responded and nearby businesses were temporarily evacuated as a precaution. DFD extinguished a small fire. A couple patrons received minor injuries, but nobody was seriously injured. Foul play is not suspected, but the incident is still under investigation by Downey Fire.
At 4:30 p.m., a male and female broke into a parked car at the Stonewood Shopping Center. When the owner interrupted the burglary, the suspects fled into the nearby neighborhood, both were eventually caught by police. Both suspects were arrested for vehicle burglary.
Friday, April 22:
At 10:00 a.m., a residential burglary occurred in the 8600 block of Springer, but an alert neighbor obtained a license plate of the suspects’ car before they left the scene. A couple hours later, detectives located the car in the area of Florence & Eastern and stopped it. Evidence tying the occupants to the earlier burglary was discovered in the car. Ultimately, two adults and one juvenile were arrested for the burglary. The juvenile was also wanted in the City of Bell for robbery.
At 7:30 p.m., a man entered Daniel’s Jewelers inside Stonewood Shopping Center and asked to see a ring and necklace. When the clerk removed the items from the display case, the suspect grabbed them from the clerk and ran out of the store. The suspect was last seen running through the parking lot but eluded capture. Detectives are investigating.
Saturday, April 23:
At 12:30 a.m., an officer patrolling Rio San Gabriel Park found three subjects in the park. All three were cited for being in the park after hours.
At 9:00 a.m., a license plate reader alerted officers of a stolen car in the downtown area. Officers stopped the car at Firestone & Pangborn and arrested the driver. The car had been stolen from the City of Industry.
At 7:00 p.m., a man stole alcohol from Aloha Liquor on Lakewood and began walking in and out of traffic on Lakewood at Stewart & Gray. Officers were able to subdue the man and arrest him for the theft. The man was also under the influence of drugs.
Sunday, April 24:
At 12:30 a.m., a man crashed his vehicle into a parked car in the 7100 block of Adwen. Officers
determined the man was under the influence of alcohol and arrested him for DUI.
At 1:00 a.m., a robbery occurred at Community Liquor (9040 Imperial). Officers tracked the suspects to a trailer park in the area where they located and arrested the suspects. Two men were arrested for robbery and one man was arrested for disorderly conduct.
At 9:00 a.m., officers patrolling the Rio San Gabriel River Channel at Firestone cited four subjects for trespassing. Another person fled from officers and ran onto the 605 freeway. Officers captured the suspect and arrested him for a “no bail” warrant.
At 10:00 a.m., a license plate reader alerted officers of a stolen car in the vicinity. Officers located the vehicle in the Embassy Suites parking lot and arrested the driver, a 46-year-old man. The car had been stolen from the City of Oceanside.
