County animal shelter stops taking pets surrendered by owners

DOWNEY — The L.A. County animal control shelter in Downey has temporarily stopped accepting pets surrendered by their owners.

The decision to stop accepting pets was made as much of the region scaled back operations in an attempt to stop the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

The animal control center is also not accepting healthy stray cats; sick or injured cats can be brought in by appointment.

Pet adoptions are also by appointment only.

Animal control officers are still responding to public safety and animal welfare calls but less urgent calls will be deferred until further notice.

SEAACA has not publicly announced changes to its operation schedule.
