Columbus High kids tour college campuses
DOWNEY - More than a dozen Columbus High School students recently toured local colleges, learning about potential careers and finding -- officials hope -- the motivation to finish high school. The trip was financed by Downey Federal Credit Union, which has sponsored a financial education class at Columbus High School's Opportunity Center for three years. Fifteen students visited Cal State Fullerton and Fullerton Community College. While touring the campuses, some students expressed interest in studying ultrasound technology or even attending law school. For many students, the field trip was their first trip to a college campus. "Downey FCU is happy to sponsor this event, in hopes the students will finish their high school studies and aspire to seek higher education for themselves," said Kari Volen, the credit union's community education and development representative. "In addition to financial education, the credit union strives to enhance students' learning experiences both in and out of the classroom."
