Carrie Uva announces candidacy for City Council

DOWNEY — Downey resident Carmela “Carrie” Uva has announced her candidacy for Downey City Council’s District 5 seat.

Uva, a lifelong Downey resident (55 years) is Downey born, raised and educated.  She attended Our Lady of Perpetual Help elementary school, got her BA from Loyola Marymount University and her JD from Western State University School of Law.  

For the past 25 years as an estate planning attorney she has assisted many Downey families in setting up their living trust and estate planning documents from her Downey office. In addition, for the past 27 years she has represented numerous residents in purchasing and selling their homes as a real estate broker with 24 Hour Real Estate.  

Uva has been very active in the community. She is a Neighborhood Watch Captain, served as President of the Downey Association of Realtors in 2016, is immediate past president of the Downey Chamber of Commerce (2019-20), appointed as commissioner of Downey Public Works Committee and commissioner of Measure S Oversight Committee which reviews the expenditure reports produced by the city to ensure that Measure S revenues are spent on capital improvements in the city, of which city parks, library,  fire stations and police department have been substantially improved with the funds  received by the ½ % increase in sales tax passed by the voters in 2016. 

Uva is also a member of the Downey Lions Club, Downey Los Amigos Kiwanis Club, Downey Sister Cities, and a member of the Downey A CERT team.  

Uva said she believes her 55 years of living in Downey, her knowledge and understanding  of the community’s needs, and her years of community involvement will assist her in being an advocate and voice for the citizens of Downey.  

“I know what it takes to get the job done,” Uva said. “Leadership is about engaging our community and providing insight to navigate the pitfalls of local government to ensure the services that residents and businesses need are provided without wasting their tax dollars.  

“Honesty, transparency and dedication are philosophies I live by. I really care about our community. I will keep our local government accountable and serve our community with a strong voice.”   

Uva’s focus will be on public safety, making sure Downey residents and streets are safe; improving public engagement in the community; maintain a business friendly environment for business owners and residents; work on reducing traffic and congestion in the city by exercising responsible planning for new development; and to continue to work with food banks and government assistance programs to help the residents in the aftermath of COVID 19.   

Uva is endorsed by Mayor Blanca Pacheco, Mayor Pro Tem Claudia Frometa, former mayor and current council member Rick Rodriguez, former mayor and current council member Sean Ashton, former mayor Roger Brossmer, and Planning Commissioners Patrick Owens, Nolveris Frometa, and Jimmy Spathos.
