Bosco pulls away late to beat Orange Lutheran
BELLFLOWER – The St John Bosco football team used an unanswered 20-point run late in the second half to take down Orange Lutheran 54-43 last Friday and remain perfect in Trinity League play ( 7-1, 3-0 ). It was Bosco’s Homecoming game and the Braves and Lancers treated the alumni in attendance to another high scoring game.
Orange Lutheran started the scoring off with an 80-yard drive and took an early 7-0 lead.
Braves running back Sean McGrew countered that with a 10-yard TD run, but Bosco botched the PAT attempt and still trailed 7-6.
The 1-point difference loomed large for most of the game as the two teams continued to trade scores.
Bosco had a six-point 27-21 lead at halftime, but a gutsy onside kick by Orange Lutheran to start the third quarter gave the Lancers the ball in Bosco territory. Orange Lutheran was able to capitalize on their gamble when running back Elijah Bynum ran the ball in from 15 yards out for the go ahead score, 28-27.
Later in the 3rd quarter Bosco linebacker DJ Willis intercepted a pass attempt by Lancer QB Lj Northington, which gave the ball back to Bosco.
The turnover lead to a Josh Rosen to Jared Harell touchdown pass and put the Braves back in front 34-28 late in the third.
Undaunted by his interception, Northington took the ensuing kick-off and capped off his team’s drive with a scrambling TD run and a Lancer lead of 35-34.
Down by a point early in the fourth quarter. Bosco responded with a Rosen quarterback keeper and took back the lead 41-35.
Having the lead Bosco’s defensive unit picked just the right moments to make plays. The special teams defense stopped Orange Lutheran’s fake punt attempt and gave the Braves offense great field position.
Bosco took advantage and stretched their lead to 47-35 after McGrew scored on a 26-yard run. Bosco missed the PAT.
Once again a Bosco defensive player was in the right place when Mykal Tolliver returned a tipped pass interception 60-yards for the game clinching score.
Orange Lutheran scored a last minute touchdown, but by then Bosco was in control and on their way to the 54-43 victory.
Bosco plays Servite tonight at 7 pm. The game will be at Cerritos College.
