Bears, Vikings hopeful as baseball season gets into full swing

DOWNEY – The Downey High School baseball team currently has an overall record of 4-8 and a league record of 1-0. 

The Vikings were defeated by Bellflower 15-7 on April 3 in a final tune-up game before the start of league play. Downey defeated Dominguez at Downey 13-0 on Tuesday and will travel to play the Dons later today in the away part of the home and away series. Downey looks to stay unbeaten against Dominguez.

The Vikings began the St. Paul Tournament against La Salle of Pasadena on Wednesday (score unavailable at press time). The St. Paul Tournament will last the better part of two weeks and will run through April 19. 

Downey will continue league play when they travel to Lynwood next Tuesday and when they host the Knights next Friday. The Vikings will return from Easter Break and resume league play when they host cross-town rival Warren on April 25 in the first game and when they travel to play the Bears on April 28 in their second game.

Downey will continue their regular season when they host Gahr on May 2 and when they travel to Gahr on May 5. The Vikings will conclude their regular season when they travel to Paramount on May 11 and when they host the Pirates on May 13. 

Gahr, Paramount and Warren will once again be the teams to beat in league play. Coach Gonzalez, his staff and players are all looking forward to league play and competing for a league title. 

■ The Warren High School baseball team currently has an overall record of 9-4 and began league play this week when the Bears traveled to Paramount on Tuesday and when they host the Pirates later today (scores unavailable at press time). 

Warren just finished competing in the Beaumont Tournament last week where they finished with a record of 2-2. The Bears defeated Aquinas of San Bernardino 11-1 on 3/29, defeated Jurupa Hills of Fontana 8-2 on 3/30, were defeated by Royal of Simi Valley 4-1 on 3/31 and were defeated by La Quinta 11-1 on 4/1.

The Bears will continue league play next week when they host Gahr on Tuesday and when they travel to play the Gladiators next Thursday. Warren will not play any league games over Easter Break. The Bears will travel to cross-town rival Downey on April 25 and will then host the Vikings on April 28 to complete the away and home series. The Bears will then host Dominguez on May 2 and will travel to play the Dons on May 5.  

Warren will host Hemet in a non-league double header on May 6 and will return to league play when they travel to Lynwood on May 9 and when they host the Knights on May 11.

It has been a busy preseason thus far and league play is just beginning. Coach Pearson, his staff and players are all looking to competing for a league title. Downey, Gahr and Paramount will once again be the teams to beat in San Gabriel Valley League play. 

■ The Downey High School softball team currently has an overall record of 7-9 and a S.G.V.L. record of 1-0. 

The Lady Vikings were defeated by California at California 9-5 on April 3 in a final tune-up game before the start of league play. Downey defeated Dominguez at Downey 17-0 on Tuesday to earn their first league win.

The Lady Vikings traveled to Lynwood yesterday (score unavailable at press time) and will host cross-town rival Warren on April 11. Downey will host Gahr on April 13 after they begin competing in the Whittier Christian Tournament against Duarte on April 12. Gahr currently has an overall record of 13-0 and is the reigning 2016 S.G.V.L. champion. 

The Lady Vikings will be competing in the Whittier Christian Tournament this weekend and are scheduled to play Duarte on April 12, Palos Verdes on April 14 and Royal of Simi Valley on April 15. 

Coach Karzen, his staff and players are all looking forward to the start of league play. The Lady Vikings missed postseason play last season after losing a heartbreaker to Paramount in their final league game. Downey finished last season with an overall record of 16-15 and a S.G.V.L. record of 5-5. Gahr and Warren will once again be the teams to beat in league play. 

■ The Warren High School softball team currently has an overall record of 7-5 and a league record of 1-0. The Bears are currently competing in the La Mirada Showcase Tournament where they are 1-1. 

The Bears were defeated by Chino 2-0 on April 1 and defeated Montebello 12-1, also on April 1. The Bears will continue with the La Mirada Showcase Tournament this weekend when they play Kaiser of Fontana and a to-be-determined opponent the same day based on the result of the Kaiser game.

The Bears defeated Paramount at Paramount 8-1 in their league opener on Tuesday and hosted Gahr yesterday (score unavailable at press time). Gahr is the returning league champion and is currently 13-0 in preseason play. Warren will travel to cross-town rival Downey next Tuesday and will host the Dominguez Lady Dons next Wednesday.

Warren is scheduled to compete in the Diamond Bar Tournament April 13-15 against opponents who have yet to be determined. The Bears will resume league play when they travel to Lynwood on April 25 and when they host Paramount on April 27.

Gahr is the team to beat in league play and have looked very good in preseason play. The rivalry games with Downey tend to be highly entertaining as well. Coach Starksen, her staff and players are all looking forward to league play and challenging for a league title.
