Assistance League awards 22 scholarships

DOWNEY – Assistance League of Downey, a chapter of National Assistance League, recently awarded 22 scholarships to graduating Downey and Warren High School seniors.

Each recipient was awarded $1,000 to use toward college costs. Awards were granted on the basis of their outstanding volunteer service in the community.

An awards dinner and reception was held at the Casa de Parley Johnson for recipients and their families. Speakers included Mayor Mario Trujillo; Ari Ruiz, District Director for Assembly Member Blanca Pacheco; Nancy Swenson, DUSD School Board President; Martha Sodetani, former school board member and Assistance League member; Giggy Saab, DUSD School board member; Stefanie Miller, Scholarships Chairman; and the President of Assistance League of Downey, Charlene Roche.
