Art exhibit added to Downey Symphony concert
DOWNEY — As part of the Downey Symphony’s concert Saturday honoring Beethoven’s 250th birthday, there will also be an accompanying art exhibit under the theme “Retro.”
A dozen artists, most local, will be participating. The featured artist is Basma Kassem.
Born in Damascus, Kassem practiced law for many years. But when she came to the United States 10 years ago, she decided to fulfill her dream of becoming an artist.
She studied at Long Beach Community College and has developed a distinctive style, reflecting emotions through the eyes of the figures in her paintings. Her work speaks especially to the burdens and pressures women face in their responsibility to be essential elements in building society.
Other participating artists include Lindsay (Yost) Marie, Kristan Haitz, Christopher Landeros, Jesse Loc, and others.
Tickets to the concert and art show are $30-$35, depending on seating area. Student tickets are $10.
Downey Theatre doors open at 7:15 p.m. Music director Sharon Lavery will give a pre-concert talk at 7:15 p.m. and the concert begins at 8.
Free parking is available at the theater and also across the street at Downey High School.
The Downey Symphony is now in its 62nd consecutive season in Downey.
