DOWNEY — Anthony Hildebrand was officially sworn in as Downey's 11th fire chief during a ceremony last week that underscored both celebration and urgency, as wildfires ravaged parts of Southern California.

Outgoing Fire Chief Dan Hurlock administered the oath of office, while Hildebrand’s parents held the Bible.

Hildebrand, who has served the Downey Fire Department since 2003, stepped into the role with over two decades of experience in fire service. Notably, he has led initiatives such as the development of a tactical paramedic team supporting SWAT operations and a high school fire technology and EMT certification program in partnership with Downey Unified School District.

“I am honored to lead the exceptional men and women of the Downey Fire Department,” said Hildebrand. “Together, we will continue to deliver the highest level of public safety and foster a strong connection with the community we serve.”

The timing of the event highlighted the ongoing demands on the fire department. In response to the wildfires, the Downey Fire Department dispatched two fire engines, including search and rescue personnel—a total of 15 team members—to assist in combating the blazes.

Mayor Hector Sosa expressed confidence in Hildebrand’s ability to lead the department. “His leadership, experience and commitment to innovation reflect the values that make our fire department one of the finest in the region,” he said.

Hildebrand, a South Bay native, holds a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Santa Clara University and a Master of Public Administration from the University of Texas. He currently resides in Murrieta with his wife and four sons. He officially assumed his role as Fire Chief on January 1, 2025.

“Chief Hildebrand has dedicated his career to serving the residents of Downey,” said city manager Roger Bradley. “His focus on safety, service and community engagement ensures our fire department is well-prepared to meet the needs of our growing city.”
