Sports Briefs: Warren sweeps doubleheader
DOWNEY – The Warren High School baseball team currently has an overall record of 4-1 and will begin S.G.V.L. play on April 12 when they host Paramount.
The Bears swept a doubleheader against Hoover at Hoover 8-2 and 15-5 on 2/27. Warren then defeated Los Altos at Warren 12-0 on 2/29, were defeated by Northview at Northview 2-1 on 3/2 and defeated West Valley at West Valley 5-1 on 3/4.
Warren hosted South Hills on Wednesday (score unavailable at press time), will host Norwalk next Tuesday and will host Bell the following Monday.
Warren finished last season with an overall record of 22-9 and were defeated by Etiwanda 2-1 in the second round of the C.I.F. Division 2 playoffs. Coach Pearson, his staff and players are looking forward to the 2016 baseball season.

The Warren High School softball team currently has an overall record of 2-2 and will begin S.G.V.L. play on April 7 against Paramount at Warren.
The Bears participated in the Redondo Tournament 2/27-3/3. Warren finished the tournament with a record of 2-2. The Bears were defeated by West Torrance 2-1 in their first game on 2/27 defeated Santa Monica 10-4 in their second game on 2/27, were defeated by West Torrance 12-2 in their third game on 3/3 and defeated Jurupa Hills 6-2 in their fourth game on 3/3.
Warren hosted La Serna on Wednesday (score unavailable at press time), will host Santa Fe next Tuesday and will host Kennedy in a doubleheader on 3/22.
Warren finished last season with an overall record of 23-5 and were defeated by San Clemente 10-3 in the second round of the C.I.F. Division 3 playoffs.

The Downey Calvary Chapel softball team currently has an overall record of 5-0 and will start league play on April 12 against Oxford Academy at Oxford Academy.
The Lady Grizzlies swept a doubleheader against Arrowhead Christian at Arrowhead Christian 23-1 and 11-5 on 2/27. DCC defeated Pioneer at Columbus High School 14-1 on 3/1, defeated Calvary Murrieta at Calvary Murrieta 7-4 on 3/4 and defeated Saddleback Valley Christian at Saddleback Valley Christian 18-1 on Tuesday.
The Lady Grizzlies are being led by two-time All-C.I.F. catcher Tiana Rodriguez and Academy All-League third baseman Bella Veloz. Freshman pitcher Raylene Roybol has looked solid in the circle for DCC by tossing two complete games in her first three starts.
The Lady Grizzlies return 11 players from last season and look to make another playoff run. DCC has qualified for postseason play in nine straight seasons. This year’s team looks to continue that streak.
DCC will host Norwalk later today, will travel to the Archer School for girls next Tuesday and will begin the Ontario Christian Tournament against Glendora next Friday.
The Lady Grizzlies compete in the Academy League. The Academy League for high school softball consists of Calvary Chapel, Crean Lutheran, Oxford Academy, Whitney and Brethren Christian. DCC plays in Division 6.

The Downey High School Cheer Program hosted its annual Dodgeball Tournament fundraiser in the gym last Friday night and 17 teams competed for school bragging rights. When the dodgeballs stopped being thrown and caught, Dem Boyzzz claimed their third straight championship.
Dem Boyzzz defeated the Dodge Fathers in their first game, defeated Balls Deep in their second game but were defeated by Free Guwop in their third game. With the loss to Free Guwop, Dem Boyzzz were pushed into the consolation bracket and were faced with a longer road to the championship game.
Dem Boyzz defeated IHT in their fourth game, defeated 10 guys in their fifth game, defeated Free Guwop in their rematch of game three in their sixth game and defeated D.B. in their seventh and final game. Dem Boyzzz finished their championship run with a 6-1 overall record and kept their trophy for the third year in a row. Pictures and selfies followed the big win.
Participants in this event included: SS Dodgers, Dodge Fathers, Dem Boyzzz, Balls Deep, Evil, Hollow Squad, IHT, Fear None, Free Guwop, Notorious Dodge, D.B., 10 Guys, The Fellas, 150 Dream Team, D.T.F., Runner Ups and the Gentleman’s Club.
Coach Patterson would like to thank all volunteers and participants in putting this event together. It was a highly competitive, special evening which raised money for the Downey High School Cheer Program.

Downey High School sophomore wrestler Jonathan Prata saw his season come to an end last weekend at the state wrestling championships in Bakersfield. Prata defeated Kyle Creech of Benecia by pin in his first match, was defeated by Brandon Betancourt of Clovis 10-4 in his second match and was defeated by Marcos Palenco of Servite 2-0 in his third match. Prata finished the tournament with a record of 1-2.

Downey High School would like to celebrate the accomplishments of two former Viking basketball players. Dakari Archer of Biola University and Garrett Neilan of Hope International University were both honored with selections to the All-Golden State Athletic Conference teams.
Dakari Archer was named "Player of the Year" and Garrett Neilan was named "Defensive Player of the Year." Both athletes helped lead their respective teams to the top seeds in the GSAC Tournament.
In the GSAC Tournament, the number five seed Westmont defeated the number four seed Arizona Christian 74-65 and the number six seed Vanguard defeated the number three seed Wlilliam Jessup 87-79 to advance to the semifinal round against Biola and Hope International, respectively.
In the semifinal round, top seeded Biola defeated Westmont 75-66 in overtime and Hope International defeated Vanguard 73-53. With both teams advancing, it set up a showdown between Archer and Neilan.
The 2016 GSAC Basketball Championship game was held on Tuesday at Hope International University and featured the two teams. Biola defeated Hope International 60-52 and earned tournament champion honors. The game was televised live by Fox Sports Prime Ticket and Fox College Sports.
