Downey, Warren open league soccer schedules

DOWNEY — The Downey High School boys’ soccer team currently has an overall record of 3-6-4 and a San Gabriel Valley League record of 1-0. The Vikings competed in the Arizona Showcase over the Christmas Break where they finished with a record of 1-2.

At the Arizona Showcase, Downey was defeated by Desert Vista of Phoenix, Arizona 1-0 in their first game on December 27th, was defeated by Carl Hayden Community of Phoenix, Arizona 4-0 in their second game on December 28th and defeated Perry of Gilbert Arizona 1-0 in their third and final game, also on December 28th.

Downey tied Woodbridge of Irvine at Downey 2-2 on January 3rd in a non-league game and defeated Gahr at Gahr 4-1 on Tuesday in their league opener. Downey hosted Paramount at Paramount yesterday and will travel to play Dominguez next Tuesday. The Vikings will host Lynwood at Downey on January 16th and will host cross-town rival Warren at Downey on January 21st in the first of their two scheduled league games.

Coach Mires, his staff and players are all looking forward to the start of league play, competing for a league title, qualifying for postseason play and making a deep run in the playoffs. Downey finished last season with an overall record of 19-5-4 and a league record of 8-0-2. Downey is the defending 2019 league champion. Paramount will once again be the team to beat in league play.

WARREN GIRLS SOCCER: The Warren High School girls’ soccer team currently has an overall record of 2-3-3 and a San Gabriel Valley League record of 1-0.

The Lady Bears were defeated by La Mirada at Warren 1-0 on December 17th, were defeated by Corona del Mar of Newport Beach 3-1 on December 21st and competed in the North Orange County Tournament December 27th and 28th where they finished with a record of 0-1-1.

At the North Orange County Tournament, Warren tied La Mirada 1-1 on December 27th and was defeated by Upland 3-0 on December 28th. Warren defeated Dominguez at Warren 7-0 in their league opener on Tuesday and traveled to Lynwood to play the Lady Knights yesterday (score unavailable at press time).

Warren will travel to Paramount to play the Lady Pirates next Tuesday and will host Gahr at Warren next Thursday. The Lady Bears will travel to cross-town rival Downey on January 21st to complete the first round of league play.

Warren finished last season with an overall record of 18-6-4 and a league record of 9-0-1. Warren and Downey will once again be the teams to beat in league play.

WARREN BOYS SOCCER: The Warren High School boys’ soccer team currently has an overall record of 2-3-3 and a San Gabriel Valley League record of 1-0. Warren defeated Mayfair at Mayfair 3-2 on December 20th and tied Long Beach Poly at Long Beach Poly 0-0 on December 30th.

The Bears also competed in the Adidas West Coast Showcase December 12th-14th where they finished with a record of 0-3. Warren was defeated by Hamilton of Chandler, Arizona 3-1 on December 12th, was defeated by Los Alamitos 2-1 on December 13th and was defeated by Loyola of Los Angeles 2-0 on December 14th.

Warren defeated Dominguez at Dominguez 5-0 on Tuesday and hosted Lynwood at Warren yesterday (score unavailable at press time). The Bears are scheduled to play Bell Gardens at Bell Gardens tomorrow in a non-league game. Warren will host Paramount at Warren next Tuesday and will travel to Gahr to play the Gladiators next Thursday. Warren will travel to cross-town rival Downey on January 21st for the first of their two scheduled league games.

The Bears finished last season with an overall record of 7-15-2 and a league record of 4-6. Cross-town rival Downey and Paramount will once again be the teams to beat in league play.

At the N.O.C.C. Tournament, Downey defeated Yorba Linda 1-0 in their first game on December 27th at 10:15 a.m., defeated Redlands East Valley 1-0 in their second game on December 27th at 6:00 p.m. and tied Sunny Hills 0-0 in their third and final game on December 28th. The Lady Vikings were defeated by J Serra at J Serra 4-0 on December 31st.

The Lady Vikings competed in the South Bay Soccer Classic Tournament January 2nd-4th where they finished with a record of 0-1-2. Downey tied Granite Hills 0-0 in their first game on January 2nd, tied Huntington Beach 1-1 in their second game on January 3rd and was defeated by Grossmont of El Cajon 1-0 in their third and final game on January 4th.

The Lady Vikings defeated Gahr at Downey 2-0 on January 7th and traveled to Paramount yesterday (score unavailable at press time). Downey will host Dominguez next Tuesday and will travel to Lynwood to play the Lady Knights next Thursday. Downey will host cross-town rival Warren on January 21st in the first of their two scheduled league games.
