Sue Phillips Memorial Fundraiser returns for its 10th year Saturday
DOWNEY -- The tenth annual Sue Phillips Memorial fundraiser, which raises money for the Avon 39 The Walk to End Breast Cancer in the memory of late Downey resident Sue Phillips, takes place this Saturday with Comedy Fighting Cancer show, dinner and a silent auction.
The fundraiser begins at 6 p.m. at the Downey Masonic Lodge, located at 8244 3rd St. The cost of the event is $35 per person. All proceeds benefit the Avon Breast Cancer Foundation.
Downey residents Howard Phillips, Malia Phillips, Alicia Edquist and Stephanie Medlin will be participating in the Avon 39 The Walk to End Breast Cancer in Santa Barbara in September. Howard will walk 39.3 miles and is required to raise at least $1,800 to participate in the walk, while Malia, Alicia and Stephanie will be joining the crew to support the walkers along the route.
Comedy Fighting Cancer is a show produced by local stand-up comic Vic Diaz.
The event will feature rising comedians who have performed on television and comedy clubs across the country.
The show’s lineup consists of Vic Diaz (Ice House, Brea Improv, Flappers Comedy Club), Jake Leos (Brea Improv, Comedy Store), Nick Phillips (Flappers Comedy Club, Laugh Factory), Luis Marquez (Flappers Comedy Club, Ice House), Julian Fernandez (USA Network’s "First Impressions"), and hosted by Charles Sanchez (NuvoTV’s “Unacceptable Behavior”, MADTV, BET’s Comic View, Comedy Central’s Premium Blend).

The fundraiser is in memory of Susan Phillips, who lost her battle with breast cancer is 2002. Sue was active in Downey PTA, West Downey Little League, Job's Daughter's and Warren High Band Boosters. She also taught Tot Time for the City of Downey.
Each walker must raise $1,800 to walk the Avon Walk two-day, 39.3-mile walk Sept. 10-11 in Santa Barbara.
