NORWALK - Residents living near the Norwalk Civic Center can expect increased noise and vibration as Caltrans begins pile-driving work today on Adoree Street near Norwalk Boulevard.

Crews began using large cranes and hammering equipment to construct a soundwall and retaining wall foundation as part of the 5 Freeway expansion. Workers are also driving steel piles into the ground.

Construction on Adoree will take place weekdays between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. and is expected to continue through December.

"Caltrans thanks the motoring public and the City of Norwalk residents and businesses for their patience during construction," Caltrans officials said in a statement.

The southbound I-5 on-ramp at Norwalk Boulevard and San Antonio Drive will permanently close Oct. 15. A new temporary on-ramp will re-open in spring 2014.

Caltrans is adding one carpool lane and one general purpose lane in each direction of the 5 Freeway between the Orange County border and Downey.

Modification work is also being done to the undercrossings at San Antonio Drive, Imperial Highway, Pioneer Boulevard and Orr and Day Road.
