The So Cal Athletics-Mercado 12u travel softball team won the PGF national championship Aug. 2 after an exciting 4-3 victory over the DirecTV Genies from Frisco, Tex., in a game that was not decided until the bottom of the seventh inning. Paloma Usquiano, 13, a resident of Downey, represented her hometown on the Athletics. She started her softball career with the Downey Ponytails pee-wee division with then-Coach Mark Fetter. Paloma is the starting shortstop.
