BELLFLOWER – St. John Bosco released their 2014 football schedule last Wednesday. The Braves will be playing three of their ten scheduled games against schools outside of California. St. John Bosco opens their fall 2014 season on Aug. 22 at Aloha Stadium, in Hawaii, against St. Louis High School.

The Braves will host Central Catholic of Oregon, three weeks later, on Sept. 12 and will play against Bishop Gorman of Las Vegas, Nev., on Sept. 26. The Bishop Gorman game will be televised nationally on ESPN.

The two other non-league games are scheduled against Norwalk on Sept. 5 at Excelsior High School and Crenshaw on Oct. 3 at Crenshaw High School.

Bosco will play Mater Dei at home on Oct. 10, J Serra on Oct. 16 at San Juan Hills High School, Orange Lutheran at home on Oct. 24, Servite on Oct. 31 at Cerritos College and Santa Margarita at home on Nov. 7.

St. John Bosco finished this past season with an overall record of 16-0 and a Trinity League record of 5-0. Bosco’s closest league game was a 42-24 win against Orange Lutheran at Bosco. The Braves’ closest C.I.F. Division I playoff game was a 34-7 win against Mater Dei at Anaheim stadium in the PAC 5 championship game.

St. John Bosco defeated Corona Centennial 70-49 in the southern California championship game at Cerritos College and then defeated Concord De La Salle 20-14 in the California state championship game at StubHub Center. For their decisive victories, St. John Bosco was selected as the MaxPreps national champion.

The Long Beach Press-Telegram released its annual Dream Team for girls’ soccer Saturday. Downey High School senior midfielder Lucy Martinez was the only player from Downey, as well as the San Gabriel Valley League, to be selected to the first team.

Downey junior goalkeeper Idalis Gonzalez and senior midfielder Janeth Acuna were both selected to the second team. Senior midfielder Maritza Acuna was given honorable mention recognition.

Lucy Martinez was named the MVP of the San Gabriel Valley League for her outstanding play. Martinez was also selected to the All-CIF team. Martinez led the Lady Vikings to a perfect 10-0 season in league play and the S.G.V.L. title. Downey was eliminated early in Division 4 playoff competition this year after winning the Division 4 title last year. Downey finished third in the final Press Telegram rankings behind St. Joseph’s and La Mirada, respectively.

Warren senior midfielder Marlene Arceo, senior defender Kimberly Duran and senior defender Alanis Leiva were given honorable mention recognition. Lynwood senior forward Stephanie Banderas and senior defender Janet Lainez were also given honorable mention recognition. No players from Dominguez, Gahr or Paramount were selected.

St. Joseph’s sophomore midfielder Savannah DeMelo was selected as the Press-Telegram’s Player of the Year and St. Joseph’s head coach Eddie Perez was selected as Dream Team Coach of the Year.

The Long Beach Press-Telegram released its annual Dream Team selections for boys’ soccer last Friday. Warren senior defender Danny Lopez and senior midfielder Alex Lopez were both selected to the first team and Bear senior goalkeeper Christopher Dominguez was selected to the second team.

Danny Lopez was selected as Co-MVP of the S.G.V.L. alongside Paramount’s Alfredo Solis. Lopez was also named Division 2 All-CIF. Warren sophomore midfielders Juan Albizar and Carlos Maldanado were given honorable mention recognition for their fine play.

Warren finished third in the final Long Beach Press Telegram rankings behind Valley Christian and St. John Bosco, respectively. Paramount finished sixth and Downey finished tenth.

St. John Bosco junior midfielder David Rodriguez was selected to the first team Dream Team and Downey senior forward Javier Torreblanca was given honorable mention recognition for his efforts.

The San Gabriel Valley League had representatives from four different schools selected for Dream Team recognition. Paramount senior defender Alfredo Solis, junior midfielder Alfredo Garcia and senior forward Kevin Alvarado were all selected to the first team. Lynwood senior defender Bryan Melendez and senior forward Francisco Morales were selected to the second team. There were no players from Dominguez or Gahr selected.

The Long Beach Press-Telegram Player of the Year was Valley Christian senior defender Jeremy Stanley and the Coach of the Year was Valley Christian’s Sean Toth.

The Long Beach Press-Telegram released it’s annual Dream Team selections for boys’ basketball Wednesday. Downey senior guard Sal Carlos was selected to the second team and senior forward Jacob Garcia was given honorable mention recognition.

Sal Carlos averaged 17.9 points per game, 5.1 rebounds per game and 2.4 assists per game. Jacob Garcia averaged 14.1 points per game, 6.8 rebounds per game and 2.7 assists per game in leading the Vikings this past season.

Downey finished their season with an overall record of 23-6 and were 9-1 in S.G.V.L. play. The Vikings were the 2014 S.G.V.L. champions. Downey lost in the second round of the CIF Division 1AA playoffs to Roosevelt 72-58.

St. John Bosco had three first team Dream Team selections. Junior guard Tyler Dorsey, senior guard Daniel Hamilton and sophomore forward Vance Jackson were all selected. Gahr senior guard Malachi Hoosein was also selected to the first team.

The San Gabriel Valley League had players from four different schools represented. Lynwood senior guard Kevin Miller was selected to the second team. Warren senior guard D’Caran Anderson, Gahr junior guard Jeremy Carlyle, Paramount senior guard Jonathan Fleming and Lynwood senior guard Latrell Upshaw were all given honorable recognition honors for their efforts.

Mayfair junior point guard Kendall Small was selected as the Press-Telegram’s Player of the Year and Long Beach Poly head coach Shelton Diggs was named Coach of the Year.
