Park condition

Dear Editor: I’d like to echo Mr. Morris’ concerns about the poor condition of Furman Park’s lawns. (“Furman Park,” Letters to the Editor, 7/18/14)

My wife and I were just there on the 23rd to listen to Joshua Tree perform and found what might be the last patch of nice green lawn, surrounded by weeds and dirt.

I’m sure our city leaders are well aware of the poor condition of the park’s lawns, as Mayor Vasquez and Councilman Guerra were both there, walking around, shaking hands, and talking with the public (yes, talking during the concert, sad to say).

I hate to break it to Mr. Morris, but don’t get your hopes up, our city council rarely responds to the needs or input of just one citizen. I know this as at least a year ago I sent an email to our district councilman about the poor lawn condition at Furman Park and did not even get a reply.

I’m at a loss as to why the city would allow Furman Park to deteriorate to its current condition as the free concerts attract not only Downey citizens, but citizens from surrounding communities as well. I’d think they would want to make it as presentable as possible. And the condition of the lawn predates any drought worries, so that’s not an excuse. Quite frankly, it’s embarrassing.

So what about it City Council?
