La Mirada Theater releases 2014-15 schedule
LA MIRADA – The La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts has released its 2014-15 season schedule, highlighted with the world premiere of the musical “Pride and Prejudice” and the Los Angeles premiere of “Carrie the Musical.” The full schedule is below:
Sept. 19 – Oct. 12, 2014: “Good People”
In south Boston, this month’s paycheck covers last month’s bills, bingo is a night on the town, and sharp-tongued single mom Margie Walsh has just been let go from yet another job. Scrambling to make ends meet, she looks up an old flame, hoping he’ll help her make a fresh start in this humor-filled drama from Pulitzer Prize-winner David Linsday-Abaire about how twists of fate determine our path. Contains mature language and themes.
Oct. 24 – Nov. 16, 2014: “Late Nite Catechism: Las Vegas Sister Rolls the Dice”
“Late Nite Catechism” is the latest class in the sinfully funny Catechism series. The church needs a new roof, so Father Murphy has decided that Sister, with her extensive gambling experience running the church bingo for last 25 years, will organize a Las Vegas night. Sister will tackle topics ranging from magicians to show girls. Don’t forget: what happens in Vegas may stay in Vegas, but God sees everything.
Jan. 16 – Feb. 8, 2015: “Billy Elliot”
Millions of fans, thousands of standing ovations, 10 Tony Awards including Best Musical…one show shines above the rest. This is “Billy Elliot,” the spectacular show with the heart, humor and passion to be named Time magazine’s “Best Musical of the Decade.”
Set in a northern mining town, against the background of the 1984 miners’ strike, “Billy Elliot” is the inspirational story of a young boy’s struggle against the odds to make his dream come true. Follow Billy’s journey as he stumbles out of the boxing ring and into a ballet class where he discovers a passion for dance that inspires his family and community, and changes his life forever.
April 17 – May 10, 2015: “Pride and Prejudice”
In this musical, which was the runaway hit of the New York Musical Theatre festival, the love story of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy comes to life when Jane Austen and her sister, Cassandra, revisit “First Impressions,” an earlier version of the beloved novel. As Austen makes changes, the Austen sisters must learn to see both the story and each other in a new light.
May 29 – June 21, 2015: “Mary Poppins”
Based on the books by P.L. Travers and the classic Walt Disney film, “Mary Poppins” includes a score filled with timeless classics such as “Feed the Birds,” “Jolly Holiday,” “Step in Time” and the Academy Award winning “Chim-Chim Cher-ee.” The jack of all trades, Bert, introduces us to England in 1910 and the troubled Banks family. Young Jane and Michael have sent many a nanny packing before Mary Poppins arrives on their doorstep. Using a combination of magic and common sense, she must teach the family how to value each other again.
“Mary Poppins” delighted Broadway audiences for more than 2,500 performances and received nominations for nine Olivier and seven Tony awards.
March 12 – April 5, 2015: “Carrie the Musical”
Twenty-five years after its spellbinding premiere shocked critics and audiences from London to New York, “Carrie” the Broadway musical comes to Los Angeles for the very first time.
A misfit at school, terrorized by her holier-than-thou mother at home, 17-year-old Carrie White nonetheless has a secret. And when a prank at the high school prom goes horribly wrong, they’ll all find out just how scary a secret can be. The show has been called “outrageous, controversial and completely thrilling.”
March 1, 2015: “Ballroom with a Twist”
“Ballroom with a Twist” brings a frenzy of sizzling dance spanning the hot moves of samba, waltz, foxtrot, quickstep, jive, hip-hop and contemporary mixed with several “American Idol” finalists and their powerhouse songs. It’s a star-studded evening suitable for the entire family.
