Kiwanis Foundation donates $80K

DOWNEY – Downey Kiwanis Foundation president Jerry Wetzstein recently delivered a $80,000 check to the Kiwanis International Foundation in support of the Eliminate Project, a global effort to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. “This deadly disease steals the lives of nearly 60,000 innocent babies and a significant number of women each year,” Kiwanis officials said.

The $80,000 donation will provided approximately 44,000 vaccines to 25 countries that still suffer from tetanus.

Kiwanis Club of Downey is one of only four clubs in California to pledge $100,000 to the cause. With the foundation’s contribution and several projects and fundraisers planned throughout the year, the Kiwanis Club of Downey is confident it can raise more than $100,000.

Kiwanis Club of Downey meets the first and third Thursday of every month at 6:30 p.m. and the second, fourth and fifth Thursday at noon. Meetings are held at the Rio Hondo Event Center.
