NORWALK − American Legion, known for its financial and social support to past and present members of the U.S. Armed Forces, has been a staple in the Norwalk community since 1928. But according to auxiliary president Becky Bullard, the veterans organization might be homeless in just two short months if members can’t raise $45,000 to pay back the estate of a deceased member.

Prior to his death nearly six months ago, the American Legion Post 359 accepted several loans from the former member, even agreeing to sign a promissory note, which listed the club building as collateral.

Bullard says the organization has already exhausted its options.

“We’ve taken it to a lawyer and there’s nothing we can do,” she said. “As soon as he died, his daughter called the note due...two years early and without notice.”

If the funds are not collected by Sept. 9, Bullard says the new creditor can foreclose on the property, located at 11986 Front St., and sell it at auction.

To raise money, Norwalk American Legion has launched a fundraising campaign called “Failure Is Not An Option” online at gofundme.com. According to the site, the organization has collected more than $5,700 since last month.

Bullard says members are also planning to host fundraisers at local restaurants and petition larger companies and non-profits for help.

“She didn’t have to give us the 90 days, but she did...so we’re raising all the donations we can to pay this bill,” Bullard said.
