5-mile Hunger Walk this Sunday

DOWNEY – Officials hope to raise $20,000 at the third annual Downey CROP Hunger Walk, taking place this Sunday, Oct. 12. The 5-mile walk begins in the Our Lady of Perpetual Help School gymnasium. Registration begins at 1 p.m. and the walk gets underway at 2.

The Hunger Walk raised $9,813 in 2012 and $14,748 last year. Twenty-five percent of the proceeds were donated to FoodHelp and PTA HELPS, and the remaining donations helped to alleviate hunger worldwide through Church World Service.

“We’ll do the same with this year’s funds, too,” said Rev. Christie Melby-Gibbons. “Funds will be used by CWS to help with drought response in Africa, disaster relief in Myanmar, Somali refugee resettlement in Kenya, early childhood education in Serbia, fresh water wells in Sudan, building greenhouses in Guatemala, etc.”

Residents are invited to participate by themselves or as part of a team.
