Norwalk adds 14 CNG buses

NORWALK - With funding help from the Federal Transit Administration, Norwalk has purchased 14 compressed natural gas (CNG) buses to replace existing diesel buses. The Norwalk Transit System now operates a mixed fleet of six diesel buses, 12 gasoline hybrid buses and 14 CNG buses.

CNG buses offer a number of advantages over gasoline or diesel fuel vehicles, officials said, including lower emissions of soot and cancer-causing particulates and lower cost per diesel equivalent gallon of fuel. (CNG is approximately $1.25 per gallon.)

"CNG is better for the environment and costs less, so it's better for the pocketbook, too," said Jim Parker, director of Norwalk Transit System. "It's a win-win for the community."

Residents can learn more about CNG by going online to norwalkca.gov/transportation or by scheduling an appointment to visit the Norwalk Transit facility.
