Bears looking forward to start of league

DOWNEY - The Warren High School boys' volleyball team currently has an overall record of 4-2 and will start S.G.V.L. play against Downey at Downey on March 26.Warren is the reigning San Gabriel Valley League champion and also C.I.F. Division III finalist. Warren lost to South Torrance 3-1 (25-22, 25-18, 20-25, and 25-21) in the final at Cypress College last year. Despite the C.I.F. finals loss last season to South Torrance however, Warren was invited to the Division I Southern California Regionals where they lost to Buchanan in three sets. The Bears finished last season with an overall record of 31-5 and a perfect league record of 10-0. The Bears also lost Nick Alvarez, the Long Beach Press Telegram Dream Team Player of the Year, to graduation last June. Warren has had a busy preseason schedule in order to prepare for S.G.V.L. play. The Bears defeated Cypres 3-0 on 2/26, defeated Culver City 2-1 on 3/1 and lost to Burroughs 2-0 on 3/1 as well. The Bears then defeated Rio Mesa 2-0 on 3/2, Van Nuys 2-1 on 3/2 and lost to Los Alamitos 3-1 on 3/7. The Bears traveled to Santa Fe yesterday to play the Chiefs (score unavailable at press time). Warren will play their final preseason game at Valley Christian next Wednesday before traveling to Downey in the league opener for both schools on March 26. Coach Simons and his team are certainly going to be the hunted this year by having such a successful season last year. Cross-town rival Downey (8-2 last season) should provide Warren with their toughest league match. Coach Simons and his team are looking forward to the start of league play and perhaps making another run in the C.I.F. Division III playoffs.
